Il 30 settembre scorso nella gremitissima Piazza San Pietro c’era anche un nutrito gruppo di Gelmini a partecipare alla festa per la creazione di 21 Cardinali in rappresentanza delle Chiese particolari di tante parti del mondo e tra questi S.B. Pierbattista Pizzaballa in rappresentanza della Chiesa di Gerusalemme e la Terra Santa. Una cerimonia intensa e suggestiva, tutta in latino, come in latino sono le messe cantate dentro al Santo Sepolcro dai frati francescani della Custodia, a cui i Gelmini partecipano sempre per iniziare la giornata di lavoro affidandosi a Lui. Dopo la cerimonia si è aperto il portone di bronzo del Palazzo Apostolico e abbiamo potuto salutarlo personalmente per condividere con lui la gioia di questa nomina. Siamo andati a Bergamo quando il Papa lo ha chiamato all’incarico Vescovile il 10 settembre 2016 e non potevamo non essere presenti a Roma per la sua creazione a Cardinale.
L’amicizia dei Gelmini col Cardinale Pizzaballa ha radici lontane: è iniziata nel 2006 quando fu nominato Custode dei francescani di Terra Santa. Ci accolse a Gerusalemme per fare dei lavori di manutenzione presso la custodia, all’ex orfanotrofio Maria Bambina e altri luoghi francescani. Eravamo all’inizio della nostra attività e da allora per tutti i frati diventammo “i Gelmini“, una squadra di pronto intervento della carità, disponibili anche per i lavori più umili, guardando le persone che incontravamo. Quasi ad ogni turno, amava trascorrere qualche sera a cena con noi, magari davanti a piadina e salame romagnolo (in ricordo degli anni trascorsi per i suoi studi in Emilia Romagna) o della bresaola bergamasca. Poi i fitti impegni dopo l’ordinazione Vescovile e successivamente nominato Patriarca di Gerusalemme nel 2020, hanno reso più difficile incontrarlo frequentemente, ma ha sempre trovato il modo, quando una cena non era possibile, di incontrarci con per un breve, cordiale dialogo.
Abbiamo imparato molto dal Cardinal Pizzaballa, che paternamente ci ha educato a vivere da veri cristiani in Terra Santa, tessendo rapporti con tutti, abbracciando e rispettando tutti, senza imporre niente ma partendo dalla nostra identità chiara e testimoniando la speranza. La sua disponibilità totale vissuta non solo come vocazione personale ma come servizio dei cristiani alla Chiesa Universale è per noi un esempio da seguire, riconoscendo in questa sua modalità, uno sguardo che tende a coinvolgere ogni persona a lui collegata.
Colpiscono alcune frasi che ha promulgato in occasione della sua prima omelia da Cardinale il 1 ottobre: “Considero a questa nuova chiamata alla porpora (con la quale il santo Padre ha voluto onorare me e la Chiesa di Gerusalemme) un particolare significato per me e per quanti in qualche modo a me sono uniti da vincoli umani, cristiani ed ecclesiastici-
Insistendo ancora più sotto: “Il cardinalato è per chi lo riceve e per chi è in vario modo a lui collegato.”
Allora ci viene da riflettere su quanto abbiamo vissuto in questa occasione, prima in Piazza S. Pietro poi salendo le scale del Palazzo Apostolico, fino al momento in cui gli abbiamo stretto la mano salutandolo: che senso ha per noi il gesto cha abbiamo appena vissuto, si è trattato di un mero momento sentimentale fine a se stesso, oppure anche per noi si tratta di condividere con lui e rinnovare il Si di questa amicizia in Cristo andando più a fondo di quello sguardo che la Chiesa oggi è tornata a chiedere a Lui ed a noi, che ci sentiamo a lui collegati?
Con questa seconda ipotesi ci sentiamo di riaffermare al Cardinale Pizzaballa: grazie per la tua paternità, la tua guida che intendiamo continuare a seguire fino ad imparare da te, lo sguardo di Pietro mentre dice SI a Cristo.
Si, preziosissimo amico, comprendiamo che tutto questo ha a che fare anche con ciascuno di noi e per quanto ci riguarda riaffermiamo il desiderio di continuare a camminare con te, lasciandoci guardare da Lui.
